Phase 1 Survey
Access Ecology are experienced in plant identification and vegetation survey and can perform vegetation surveys using the standard survey formats including Phase 1 Habitat Survey, Phase 2 National Vegetation Classification Survey, and Hedgerow Surveys.
Ecological Scoping Survey
Extended Phase 1 habitat survey, based on Phase 1 methodology and habitat definitions, is a more detailed survey, generally carried out over a smaller area. The area is surveyed and the vegetation is mapped on to a large scale map. A standard numerical and colour code system is used, as specified by the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) 1993. This then provides colour coded habitat maps which allow rapid visual assessment of the extent and distribution of different habitat types. The use of codes for dominant species provides a further subdivision of the habitat categories and a standard index of key words is used in compiling target notes.
Target notes are produced for each habitat, providing a habitat description and record of species of conservation concern and suitable habitat for such species. Target notes are an essential part of an extended Phase 1 survey and enhance the value of the habitat maps by providing supplementary information on sites of interest and those requiring further survey. Phase 1 habitat surveys are widely used for environmental audits and is a technique recommended by English Nature and the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management.
Access Ecology Ltd have carried out ecological scoping surveys for many different projects across the UK. We believe that proficient ecological scoping surveys are the foundations of an efficient and cost effective project, whether to local development, EIA, conservation management, or habitat creation.
An ecological scoping survey will identify issues that may affect your planned project, this in turn will allow proposals to be adapted prior to investment or in preparation for a planning application. At this stage early solutions to the potential presence of protected species can be sought with further survey, consultation, and mitigation design.
A clear ecological design will avoid adding delays and extra expenses to the project by reducing the risk of last minute demands for extra surveys and will satisfy the planners.
National Vegetation Classification (NVC) Survey
The NVC is a classification of terrestrial and freshwater vegetation and is more detailed than Phase 1 habitat survey. An initial walkover of the survey area is undertaken to determine the variation in the vegetation. For each homogenous stand identified, samples are taken using quadrats. Within each stand selected for analysis a random sample location strategy is adopted. Obvious vegetation boundaries as well as unrepresentative floristic features are avoided. Our GIS team map NVC types, preferably by overlay onto aerial photographic images. Staff members have an excellent working knowledge of a variety of lowland and upland habitats to NVC level.
Ecological Impact Assessment (EcIA)
Access Ecology Ltd can provide EcIAs for range of projects, from small-scale developments to wind farms, pipelines, and road schemes. Access Ecology adheres to the impact assessment methodology outlined in the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management's Guidelines for Ecological Impact Assessment in the United Kingdom (2006).
Hedgerow Survey
Ancient and/ or species-rich hedgerows are important habitats and in reflection of their ecological and historical value, some hedgerows are protected under the Hedgerow Regulations (1997). Access Ecology undertake hedgerow surveys using the standard survey methodology in the Hedgerow Survey Handbook (2nd edition) (DEFRA, 2007) and our appraisal includes an assessment as to whether a hedgerow is deemed ‘important' under the Hedgerow Regulations.
River Corridor Survey
Access Ecology Ltd use standard methods enhanced by visual identification of NVC types.
Rare Plant Survey
Access Ecology are able to survey for, map, and advise on the management of rare plants.
Invasive Plant Survey
We survey for and advise on control of UK invasive species.
